This project transformed the Riley Dual Language Montessori schoolyard from a vast, plain asphalt surface into a vibrant, multi-functional playscape that champions sustainability and experiential learning. The core goal was to replace impermeable pavement with features that actively manage stormwater including infiltration basins, a large underground cistern beneath a new athletic field, and strategically placed “stormwater trees” that provide shade while improving water quality. Layered on top of these green infrastructures improvements were the incorporation of new play areas and learning zones with opportunities to engage in nature- based play.
The new playground design includes a large central outdoor covered classroom with natural wood benches, a smaller classroom with picnic tables, a log climbing structure, and a loose parts stumps and sticks play area. Stepping stone pathways wind through stormwater basins with native plantings, encouraging exploration and STEM-based learning activities. For active play, a new artificial turf soccer field, a new basketball court, and a painted bike track that meanders around circular concrete planter seat walls create a dynamic and engaging environment for diversity of students.
This project was completed in partnership and collaboration with Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), Reflo and Stormwater Solutions Engineering.
