Colegio Maya serves a diverse international community in Guatamala City, Guatamala. They prepare responsible global citizens through a rigorous U.S. accredited college preparatory program. Their school campus is sophisticated and student centered, but their elementary playground lacked this attention to detail and student needs. Our team ran workshops with elementary students to talk about the site and how they wanted to play. The resulting design pulls play opportunities through the steep meadow and up into the forested ridge above. Play is grouped into areas including; a sensory play zone with sand, water and a children’s garden, a building zone with platforms and loose parts, a large motor activity zone with forts, log climbing, ropes and a many slides (including a 45’ long run through the woods), the imaginary zone play centers on the small stage and amphitheater and the learning garden zone features a green house, terraced garden and orchard. The new play space was welcomed warmly by the community. Students now explore, investigate, build, and grow outside, expanding their minds and abilities in the school and out.
