Sunstone Montessori School recently moved their preschool and elementary program to a new site and needed a playground overhaul. They had a fairly constrained site. Learning Landscapes Design worked with the school community to develop their dream program for the new space. The site is bordered by a busy street and has many mature trees. We organized the program around the site conditions, allowing for lots of physical play, game space, and imaginative and sensory space. The different zones support the Montessori concept of the ‘prepared environment’ ; each zone suggests a type of play or use. Students are free to use the materials in the zone for different exploration and activity. The project balances, students led creative play, outdoor learning and nature connection with the need for climbing, physical play, and sports. The resulting space has a central climbing loop with multiple monkey bars and a zip line, as well as an artificial turf sport field that will provide a green and dry play surface all year. Around the edges of these two spaces are three quiet gathering and imaginative zones, a sensory garden and outdoor laboratory, as well as a water play and digging area. Fencing modifications and shade sails help protect the environments. The project utilized inclusive design principles, far surpassing ADA. As a result there are numerous spaces that cater to all types of play and interest from students of many ages and abilities.
