Gilbert House Children’s Museum Inventor’s Yard – Hands-On Play Area
The mission of the Gilbert House Children’s Museum is “inspiring children to learn through creative play”. They have a fabulous indoor and outdoor children’s museum based on science and creation. Focused on children 4 -12 years old, the topics are engaging and spaces spark imagination and investigation. The Gilbert House wanted to revamp an aging wood play structure to include more hands-on play and child directed play.
The resulting space is a combination of STEM play, sand and water, climbing, sliding, and spinning. Lots of spaces for imaginative and creative play. The site is inclusive of users with all ranges of ability, young and old. An intricate balance of existing and new elements feature some more exhibit spaces like the bubble house and giant ball run. It also maintained some beloved elements like the Erector set climber, Mammoth and camping area. The sand play area features simple machines, a water pump, the giant Mammoth, quiet sand play options, an inclusive sand seat and separate wet / dry sand areas. The City zone allows visitors to explore roads, bridges, and tunnels with vehicles, move blocks and build. A sensory garden offers plant interactions, visual and musical elements and shaded seating. Physical play areas include a spinning zone with a variety of spinners and the giant Erector set for climbing and sliding. The resulting space is a inclusive experience that incorporates multiple play modes, hands-on play and exploration experiences for everyone.
