Cedar Ridge Park Inclusive Destination Playground
Learning Landscapes Design completed the planning services for an inclusive destination playground within the Village of McFarland WI. The goal was to select a site and design a destinations playground that meets the needs of every user and challenges them at their own developmental level.
We inventoried and analyzed the accessibility of each playground within the community in order to identify play and accessibility gaps and opportunities. From that process we were able to select three potential playground development sites. Bubbles diagrams of each site were presented and a survey was distributed to the community for input. Community members voted on the sites and provided useful feedback on the current use and desired use of playgrounds.
The inclusive destination playground design grew out of survey results, the client’s core team input and the Village’s strong desire for inclusive design. Elements within the playground concept include: support features (rest rooms, ADA designated parking spaces, shade, orientation path, perimeter fence, and signage), accessible playground surfacing, play equipment for all ages and abilities, a blend of natural and manufactured materials, quiet reflection spaces, and a variety sensory rich experiences.
