One Day Adventure Play Event in Portland
I am excited to announce an adventure play day that we have been planning in Portland with Pop Up Adventure Play! There will be play experts from the UK in Portland for the day hosting the event with Learning Landscapes and Planet Earth Playscapes. It will be a two part event on March 25th with lots of free play and some serious discussion too. You are invited, please join us and help spread the word!
Pop-Up Adventure Playground – 9 am to 1pm, TaborSpace, 5441 SE Belmont St., Portland
This is a one-time free-play event for kids and families! This will be a space to explore open-ended, hands-on, self-directed play with loose parts. Bring your kids, invite your friends, and rediscover how fun and creative play can be with simple materials! This is a FREE event that is open to all. No registration is required.
WORKSHOP: Adventure Play, Playworkers, and Risky Play – 6 to 8 pm, Portland Children’s Museum, 4015 SW Canyon Rd.
This is a workshop for grown-ups that will focus on the distinct qualities and benefits of PLAY, drawing on UK-based playwork approaches and international applications. We make explicit connections between children’s self-directed play and whole-child learning, health and development on both individual and community levels. By tackling issues such risk and liability, interactions with parents, access to nature and behavioural concerns, we help participants to apply adventure play and playwork approaches to their own settings. This workshop is especially suited for or professionals who work with children.
This workshop will include:
~ What we mean when we say ‘play’ – exploring common ground
~ An invitation to play – followed by group reflection
~ Not ‘unstructured’, but ‘self-structured’ – what makes children’s free play so special?
~ The power of ‘yes’ – tools for rethinking risk and challenge
~ Advocacy and explanation – encouraging meaningful engagement with parents
~ Taking play home – finding opportunities to effect immediate and long-term changes
Admission to the workshop is $20. Tickets are available at :http://www.brownpapertickets.
