Playground Design Services: What’s Included, and Do You Need a Landscape Architect?
You’ve found pictures of natural playgrounds you love. You can imagine children building forts, climbing boulders, digging, and exploring. But where do you order those features—and who figures out how they fit on your site?
That’s a common starting point for clients at Learning Landscapes Design. Playground design services bridge the gap between inspiration and a space that can actually be built.
Those services can include site planning, concept design, cost estimating, construction drawings, permitting assistance, and construction support. Whether you need all of them depends on your site and what you want to create.

Do You Need a Landscape Architect for Your Playground?
Not every playground project needs a landscape architect.
If you want traditional equipment with steel posts, platforms, and plastic slides, you can often work directly with a playground supplier. That can be a good approach when you’re replacing old equipment on a relatively flat site and keeping roughly the same layout.
“You’ll still need to confirm applicable safety recommendations, such as those in the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook, along with accessibility and local approval requirements.”
A landscape architect becomes more helpful when you want:
- A custom or nature-based playground.
- Manufactured equipment combined with gardens, landforms, or hands-on play.
- Solutions for drainage, slopes, or grading.
- Accessible pathways connecting activities.
- A coordinated plan for phased construction.
We look at how the whole outdoor environment works. A climbing feature needs appropriate surfacing, and accessible playground routes help connect children to play activities. A digging area needs drainage. Fencing, gates, planting, and circulation all need to work together.”
Professional design requirements vary by location and project scope, so identifying those needs early is important.
What’s Included in Playground Design Services?
At Learning Landscapes Design, we tailor the scope to the project. A focused improvement may need limited guidance; a complete renovation may need support from early planning through construction.
Our playground design services can include:
- Site assessment and visioning. We learn about your goals, users, budget, and existing conditions. Workshops with educators, children, families, or community members help identify what matters most.
- Concept design. We organize activities, pathways, and landscape features into an overall plan. Drawings help your team understand the proposal and communicate it to supporters.
- Cost estimating and phasing. We connect the design to the construction budget and, when needed, plan improvements that can happen over time.
- Construction documents and permitting assistance. We develop the drawings, details, and specifications contractors need, addressing site work, custom features, accessibility, and applicable requirements.
- Contractor coordination and construction support. We can assist with bidding, answer construction questions, review work at agreed milestones, and provide maintenance and inspection guidance.
Learning Landscapes Design does not install playgrounds. We prepare design packages for local contractors to build and support clients through implementation.
Our team combines landscape architecture and Certified Playground Safety Inspector expertise with a focus on children’s play and learning.
From Inspiration to Construction: Buttercup Early Childhood Center
At Buttercup Early Childhood Center in Salem, Oregon, we helped transform a traditional outdoor space into an early childhood playground with more variety.
The school occupies an old house. Much of the yard had been arranged as residential lawn and garden space rather than designed around children’s daily activities.
We retained a beautiful front garden and lawn while creating opportunities for fort building, loose parts, art, and sensory exploration. A climbing area combined log stumps with a boulder hill and a fort on top. Gravel and sand digging areas offered places to investigate, build, and invent.
We also kept a circular concrete pathway where children could push trucks. They loved that activity, and it belonged alongside the new nature play experiences.
That’s an important part of our approach: understanding what children enjoy and expanding their choices. Physical challenges matter, but so do imaginative play, child-led investigation, and opportunities to create. Variety helps children find something that matches their skills and interests.

A Project Manager to Keep Your Playground Moving
One of our most valuable services, beyond expert design, is project management.
Most clients are already busy running a school, managing a park, or supporting families. Designing and building a playground is an additional responsibility.
When you begin working with us, we assign a professional project manager who coordinates schedules, organizes next steps, and helps keep the project moving. For a full-service project, that support continues from concept design through the end of construction.
You have someone who understands the process and helps your team navigate decisions along the way.

Planning Your Playground With Learning Landscapes Design
Learning Landscapes Design creates natural playgrounds, inclusive playscapes, and outdoor learning environments for schools, early childhood programs, parks, and community organizations nationwide.
You don’t need to arrive with a finished plan. Bring your inspiration pictures, the challenges you’re facing, and what you want children to experience. An approximate budget is helpful, too.
Explore our natural playground design services to learn how we can help turn those ideas into a buildable place for play.
