Young users are often not drawn to signage in any setting. Either they can’t read or hopefully they are too busy to stop and look through a sign. But, carefully designed and placed nature playground signage can add a lot of value to your project. The Mountainside Community added their Play Acre Playscape and included these informative and fun signs.

Nature Playground Signage Content

Like any site signage, focus on topics that the user can see or apply directly to the site around the sign. Nature play areas can be new to some users, so explaining how to use the areas can be helpful. You will see the signage below shows not only technical ideas of how to tie tarps into forts, but  an invitation to play. Often kids won’t need this encouragement, but it helps adults understand that their kids can build forts, climb, pump water and explore.

Signage For Loose Parts Building Areas

This play space has a dedicated zone for fort building. The client supplies loose parts for young people to utilize in their building. The Nature Playground Signage focuses on how to successfully use the loose parts in play.  The signs below focus on knot tying and using a tarp to create a shelter. You can see the space below (right after installation) is created with a series of decks and posts. Young people can chance the environment. Making fort cities that change ever time they visit. The intent of the owner was to create spaces that engage young people for long periods of time in a central community area. It includes a sunny adult deck for meeting and observing play.
