Summer Camp Master Plan

Can you say yes to any of these 23 indicators?

If some or all of the following sound familiar, a camp facility plan or retreat center master plan may be a good next step for your organization.

Your campers or guests:
  • Complain of unsightly facilities, non-functioning facilities, or lack of facilities.
  • Can’t figure out where to go and occasionally get lost, or go to the wrong place.
  • Have few places to sit outside.
  • Have few places to take a walk – from a leisurely stroll to an active hike.
  • Comment on clutter.

A retreat center master plan will help visitors understand, appreciate and take advantage of facility assets.

Your facilities:
  • Are inadequate, outdated or no longer support your mission and programs.
  • Have vehicle or pedestrian traffic problems on site.
  • Lack clear separation for guests, vehicles and service staff.
  • Have poor visibility from the road or highway – people often miss your site entrance.
  • Are unknown by locals.
  • Are not secure from outsiders.
  • Need new facilities for new programs and you need to decide where to put them and how much they will cost.
  • Lack barrier free accessibility or don’t meet ADA.

When your facilities are organized and clarified in a master plan, they are easier to access and utilize by visitors and staff alike.

Your natural assets:
  • Are damaged and degraded.
  • Have been in decline for many years.
  • Are unattractive.
  • Are highly impacted by campers.

Defining and protecting your natural assets in a camp master plan will help create a sense of place that is unique to your site and mission.

Your donors:
  • Wonder where their money is being spent.
  • Are unenthusiastic about supporting the mundane things like “bathroom improvements” that are exactly what you need.
  • Aren’t inspired to make large gifts.
  • Are shrinking while you need to expand your donor base.

With a clear campus vision plan, donors can be engaged and educated on their potential impact.

Your organization:
  • Has never had a master plan.
  • Your current master plan no longer supports your mission and programs.

The discussions and resulting document will help bring your staff together and focused on a common future.

Do these challenges ring true for your organization? The good news is that grant programs and individual donors will be wowed when they see a clear, detailed, retreat center master plan that fully realizes your organization’s mission!
