The City of Vancouver replaced an aging playground with a new, community-inspired theme, “Play Like a Bird.” Chosen by residents, this concept directly inspired the equipment, which evokes bird nesting habitats, the motion of flight, and the splashing of a bird bath. Key features include a life-sized nest, track rides that simulate flying, and water play basins.
The playground was designed not only to be ADA compliant with accessible surfacing and equipment, but also contain other inclusive features. Bell-like musical instruments and water play provide sensory experiences with both sound and touch. Spinning equipment provides vestibular movement to help develop balance and coordination. A play nest provides an imaginative quiet retreat to reflect, and to watch more active play zones from a distance. For safety, clarity, and better visual cues, the site is fully fenced with high-contrast safety surfacing around play equipment. This project was completed in collaboration with OTAK as the prime consultant.
