Learning Landscapes Design collaborated with the Magical Bridge Foundation and the Singapore National Museum to create an intergenerational, fully inclusive destination playscape – bringing the museum’s social purpose mission outdoors. Learning Landscapes Design incorporated Magical Bridge’s trademarked design guidelines, play zones, and design review to ensure the space welcomes visitors of all ages, size, and abilities.
This new playground pays tribute to the museum’s iconic whale skeleton exhibit, once a beloved feature before being returned to Malaysia as a gesture of goodwill. Responding to the public’s fond memories, the playscape centers on a re-imagined whale structure with a slide, climbing net, and horizontal climbing ladder, finished in a colorful mosaic reminiscent of historic Singaporean playgrounds.
Inclusive design principles shaped the overall layout and experience, including clear, intuitive navigation; sensory-rich and socially engaging play zones; and familiar elements that support visitors with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive disabilities. The resulting environment invites meaningful interaction, independence, and joy for everyone. The intergenerational design connects users both young and old through senior-friendly workout features, sensory play, physical challenges, and ample inclusive seating. Under the shade of the historic Banyan Tree and custom sway bench shade structures, visitors encounter a playscape crafted to encourage movement, rest, and social connection.
The new play area at the Singapore National Museum blends historical homage with modern inclusivity and design to create a memorable and welcoming space for families, seniors, caregivers, and the broader community.
Learning Landscapes Design is honored to deliver a trademarked and licensed Magical Bridge projects as an official design partner.
